Life in the UK Test
What happens after you pass the Life in the UK Test?
Quick answer
When you pass, you’re given a pass notification with a unique reference number at the test centre on the day. You use that number in your application for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or British citizenship. A pass does not expire, so you only ever take the test once.
Your pass notification
You get your result at the centre the same day. A pass comes with a unique reference number — keep it safe, as you’ll quote it in your settlement or citizenship application. There is no separate paper certificate to wait for.
It lasts forever
A Life in the UK Test pass never expires. Once you’ve passed, you don’t need to retake it for a later application — for example, if you pass for ILR now and apply for citizenship years later, the same pass still counts.
The bigger application
The test is one requirement among several (such as residence and, usually, an English language qualification). After passing, focus on the full ILR or citizenship application and its separate fees — all detailed on GOV.UK.
This is general guidance from an independent study app, not official advice. Always confirm current requirements and fees on GOV.UK.
