Life in the UK Test
Who needs to take the Life in the UK Test?
Quick answer
You generally need to pass the Life in the UK Test if you’re applying for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) or British citizenship (naturalisation). People under 18 or aged 65 and over are usually exempt, as are some people with a long-term health condition.
Settlement and citizenship
The test is a standard requirement for two big steps: indefinite leave to remain (ILR/settlement) and naturalising as a British citizen. If you’re on a route that leads to either, you’ll almost certainly need it.
Who’s exempt
You’re normally exempt if you’re under 18 or 65 or over at the time of applying. People with a long-term physical or mental condition may also be exempt with the right medical evidence. Exemptions are decided by the Home Office — confirm your situation on GOV.UK.
English language too
Most applicants must also meet an English language requirement, which is separate from this test. If the Life in the UK Test applies to you, start practising early so it’s the easy part of your application.
